Let me turn first to the phenomenon I am calling the sexual marketplace. I am assuming that both heterosexual and homosexual desire can be, for our purposes, taken as a given. I am arguing that virtually all males and females past the age of puberty can be viewed as consumers and the objects of consumption in a market-like context, though I would add that, under circumstances to be discussed in a moment, males and females may function equally in some cultures as both consumers and as the objects of consumption....
